The Front Porch Project – checking in during COVID-19

We visited some of our host families and au pairs – all from a safe distance!

Cultural Care Au Pair recently visited some of our au pairs and host families in Boston and New York to take their photo together on the front porch of their homes.

The Front Porch Project is a trend that has been happening over the USA during the COVID-19 crisis, and our U.S. team used it as an opportunity to say hello and find out how our au pairs and host families are doing during this unusual time.

What we found was, even though it’s not an easy time for anyone, many au pairs and host families have grown closer in the last couple of months.

Brazilian au pair Sarah shared, “It’s been really nice because I have two host kids who are older and spend almost the entire day at school. So now we have time to really get to know each other. And it’s been really fun because we didn’t have this chance before.”

Denisse, an au pair from Mexico, agrees that sheltering at home has changed the relationship with her host family for the better: “We go through the same things that every family is going through right now. And now, more than ever, it feels like we are part of the same family.”

Colombian au pair Claudia is comforted during this tough time knowing that, “my host family cares about me. We always have dinners together—and we use this time to talk and share. I try to see the positive in all of this and try to give the best of myself.”

All of the au pairs and host families were also hopeful that the worst of the virus in the USA has passed. Host mom Vicki, whose family has hosted three au pairs, said, “This will all pass one day. And we can all get back to what we’re all here for which is: creating these global families for many years to come.”

Cultural Care Au Pair here! We believe that cultural exchange makes the world a better place – and so we’ve made it our life’s mission to help au pairs have enriching experiences in the USA. When we’re not helping au pairs travel, learn and grow in America, we’re probably eating candy from around the world and drinking copious amounts of coffee.
